Senior Consultant, Dr Jackie Skipper, gives GE interview following prestigious William Smith Medal Award

GCG previously shared that its Senior Consultant, Dr. Jackie Skipper, was awarded the William Smith Medal by the Geological Society of London. To celebrate this prestigious accolade, Ground Engineering magazine recently interviewed Jackie, focusing on her groundbreaking work and insights.

In the interview, Jackie discusses her innovative Project Specific Geological Training (PSGT) program, which has revolutionised industry practices by enhancing the understanding of ground risks and improving safety standards. She elaborates on her career journey, from her early days in the National Health Service, to her significant contributions to engineering geology, reflecting a unique blend of crisis management skills and geological expertise.

Jackie joined GCG in 2007 following the completion of her PhD at Imperial College London and the Natural History Museum. She made substantial contributions to major projects such as the Jubilee Line Extension, Dublin Port Tunnel, Bloomberg London, Crossrail and HS2. Her work on the stratigraphy of the Lambeth Group and her educational initiatives have been pivotal in advancing engineering geological and geotechnical knowledge.

In the interview, Jackie shares insights into her journey and the development of PSGT, which aims to teach project teams about ground risks. From its early days at the Dublin Port Tunnel to later applications for Crossrail and Thames Tideway, PSGT has proven to be an effective tool to understand and communicate the ground and its engineering risks.

Reflecting on her achievements, Jackie notes the importance of effective communication and training in managing ground risks. Her dedication to sharing knowledge has led to the development of comprehensive training programs that benefit project teams across the industry.

GCG extends heartfelt congratulations to Jackie on this well-deserved honour. Jackie will be formally presented with the William Smith Medal at a ceremony at Burlington House, London, on 12th June 2024.
