Scientific implements, being used to test ground samples

We are committed to applying state-of-the-art geotechnical knowledge in our daily practice, enabling us to deliver innovative, forward-thinking solutions for our clients. To maintain this edge, we actively foster strong academic partnerships and collaborate with leading international geotechnical research organisations.

Over the years, we have supported numerous research initiatives and supervised PhD and MSc students, contributing to the advancement of industry practice. Our pioneering work includes the development and implementation of advanced numerical modelling techniques — such as non-linear soil stiffness modelling — and improved site investigation and soil sampling methods.

We played a key role in introducing compensation grouting to the UK during the Jubilee Line Extension project, successfully protecting Big Ben from tunnelling-induced settlement — an approach now widely adopted across the industry.

Our research contributions span a wide range of topics, including:

  • Tunnel-tunnel interaction effects
  • Stability of bulk shipping cargoes
  • Erosion behaviour of clays under hydraulic loading
  • Offshore pile design through Joint Industry Projects such as PISA and ALPACA

We also serve on steering groups for academic and industry-led research programmes, ensuring that our practical insights continue to shape the future of geotechnical engineering.

From pioneering innovative construction techniques to supervising PhD level research we remain at the forefront of geotechnical innovation
