The extension of The King’s School involved the construction of a new basement adjacent heritage structures including Grade I and Grade II listed buildings within the historic Precincts of Canterbury City Wall. The excavation was undertaken within secant pile walls, extending into River Terrace Deposits and Chalk.
GCG provided geotechnical expertise to assess ground movements associated with the basement excavation and evaluated their potential impact on the adjacent heritage structures. Our analysis supported the implementation of the originally proposed temporary propping system, which effectively minimised ground deformations during excavation.
In addition, we conducted a hydrogeological assessment of the site and advised the client on the risks of basal heave and instability, ensuring excavation safety and structural integrity throughout the works.
