Chatfield Road, London

The project involved the addition of four floor to the existing four-storey building at Chatfield Street. GCG developed a practical and cost-effective foundation solution that enabled the proposed expansion to be completed within the existing building minimising disruption.

Our approach envisaged the re-use of the existing displacement flight auger (DFA) pile foundations and the introduction of new foundations to enhance their capacity.

Following a detailed desk study and targeted site investigation, which confirmed the integrity and layout of the original foundation system, we carried out a comparative assessment of alternative options and selected a strip footing system based on site accessibility and construction feasibility.

The new ground beams were designed to distribute the additional column loads in a manner compatible with both the existing and new foundation elements.

We collaborated closely with the structural engineering team to analyse the interaction between the new shallow footings and the existing deep foundations under the proposed loading conditions. The analyses considered differential settlements and displacement tolerances for each structural element and were carried out efficiently using simplified linear elastic geotechnical models and pile settlement calculations.
