Richard Jardine to Receive 2025 Harry Poulos Award and Deliver Keynote Lecture

We are delighted to announce that GCG Associate Richard Jardine will receive the 2025 Harry Poulos Award from the Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS) Sydney Chapter.

Event details

  • Date: 8 July 2026
  • Time: 5:30pm – 7:30pm AEST
  • Venue: Engineers Australia, Mezzanine Floor, 44 Market Street, Sydney NSW 2000

The Award recognises Professor Jardine’s outstanding global contributions to geotechnical engineering and his pioneering work on pile behaviour through field research, high-quality testing and practical design development. Richard is Senior Research Investigator and Emeritus Professor at Imperial College London and Visiting Professor at Zhejiang University, internationally recognised for his expertise in pile foundations, offshore geotechnics and soil–structure interaction.

As part of the ceremony, Richard will deliver a keynote lecture entitled: “Time-Dependent Axial Behaviour of Piles Driven in Clays, Sand and Soft Chalk Rock.”

The lecture will examine the time-dependent axial behaviour of driven tubular steel piles used in offshore, nearshore and bridge applications. Drawing on full-scale field experiments, long-term monitoring, advanced in-situ testing and validated numerical analyses, the presentation will explore ageing mechanisms, test current design assumptions, and clarify implications for long-term capacity, serviceability and decommissioning decisions.

Attendees will:

  • Understand the mechanisms governing time-dependent axial behaviour and ageing effects in driven piles in clays, sands and soft chalk.
  • Recognise where current design approaches may be unconservative or overly conservative.
  • Apply insights from monitoring, in-situ testing and numerical modelling to improve long-term capacity and serviceability assessments.
  • Use case histories and validated approaches to inform design checks, performance reviews and decisions on reuse or decommissioning.

GCG congratulates Richard on this prestigious international recognition.
