We are delighted to announce that Dr. David Giles, Senior Consultant at GCG, has been awarded the 2025 Glossop Medal, and will deliver this year’s Glossop Medal Lecture on 20 November, at the Royal Institution, London.
David’s lecture, titled: What has the Quaternary ever done for us?, will explore the fundamental importance of the Quaternary to engineering geology, highlighting how the legacy of recent geological processes continues to influence ground conditions, design decisions and project outcomes today. His talk will focus on the highly variable nature of Quaternary soils and landforms, and the need for engineering geologists to interpret them with care and understanding.
Speaking ahead of the event, Dr. Giles commented:
“This is a tremendous honour, especially given the list of previous recipients. It also presents the opportunity to talk about the Quaternary, a geological legacy so critical to engineering geology. The Quaternary should not be overlooked or underestimated, and Quaternary soils and landforms can vary over very short distances, both laterally and vertically.”
Post-Lecture Reception
The lecture will be followed by a reception at the Royal Institution – providing an opportunity to network and continue discussions in a relaxed and sociable setting.
Registration
- The lecture is free to attend, but registration is required.
- Tickets for the dinner and drinks reception must be booked in advance.
