We are one of world’s leading geotechnical consultancy and engineering firms, with a well established reputation for developing innovative geotechnical solutions to technical demanding engineering problems.

Founded in 1983 by Professor Lord Robert Mair, Professor David Hight and the late Professor Peter Vaughan, we operate as an independent Limited Liability Partnership, including a co‐ordinated group of highly qualified consultants pooling their wide range of skills and experience to provide a comprehensive advisory and specialist consulting service in geotechnical engineering.

Our team comprises pioneers within the geotechnical community, including  10 Rankine lecturers, 2 Glossop lecturers, 5 Geotechnique lecturers, 2 Harding lecturers, 1 William Smith Medal recipient and 1 Terzaghi lecturer. Members of our team are Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Fellows of the Royal Society, and chairman or past chairman of the Geological Society and the British Geotechnical Association.

Our expertise in geotechnical engineering is widely based and has been developed over many years of consulting to industry and Government, both in the UK and internationally.  Since our formation, we have been called on by over 300 clients from more than 50 countries.

We are actively engaged in applied and fundamental research in the field of geotechnics , which ensures that our consulting service draws on the most recent developments in engineering theory, research and practice from around the world to provide a comprehensive advisory and specialist consulting service in geotechnical engineering and innovative solutions to our client’s engineering problems.

We are members of the British Tunnelling Society (BTS), British Geotechnical Association (BGA), Association of Geotechnical & Geoenvironmental Specialists (AGS) and core members of the Construction Industry Research and Information Association (CIRIA).

What we do

We provide specialist geotechnical assistance and expert advice to civil engineers and structural consultants, to government departments and to leading specialist geotechnical contractors.

Our services range from input at tender stage on the interpretation of ground conditions to troubleshooting during construction, through to the development and analysis of alternative, more economic design solutions.

We also provide advice on claims and forensic investigations.

University partnerships

We maintain strong links with world-class universities (notably with Imperial College, Cambridge, City, Oxford, Dundee, Barcelona, Kobe, Cornell and Berkeley Universities) to enable early implementation of state-of-the-art research and development into engineering practice.
