Honouring Dr Jacqueline Skipper: A luminary in geotechnical consulting, recognised with the William Smith Medal by the Geological Society of London

GCG is proud to announce that Dr Jackie Skipper, a leading figure in engineering geology has been awarded the William Smith Medal, the highest applied geological accolade awarded by the Geological Society of London. Dr Skipper is one of only three women ever to be awarded this medal, and additionally only a handful of engineering geologists have achieved this tremendous accolade, which recognises outstanding research in applied or economic geology.

The awards ceremony, set to be a highlight of the Society’s calendar, will take place on 12th June 2024, at the esteemed Burlington House in London. This event will pay tribute to individuals whose exceptional contributions have advanced the field of geology over the past year.

Jackie, a Senior Consultant at GCG, has garnered respect and recognition for her contributions to ground investigation and construction geology. Her extensive portfolio of work includes pivotal roles in significant infrastructure projects such as the Elizabeth Line (formerly Crossrail), Dublin Port Tunnel, Thames Water Tideway Tunnel, and the Northern Line Extension, among others. Her expertise remains in high demand, underscoring her status as a venerable figure in the industry, even as she embraces semi-retirement.

Beyond her project work, Jackie has made indelible marks through her commitment to educational excellence and risk management in geotechnical practices. Her pioneering efforts in Project Specific Geological Training have led to advancements in how geological risks are understood and mitigated, particularly concerning the stratigraphy of the London and Hampshire Basins.

Jackie is now decorated with three medals and numerous accolades, including the Geological Society Engineering Group Award (2010), the Glossop Medal (2017), and the co-recipient of the Geologists’ Association Richardson Award (2020). These honours are testament to her enduring impact on the geotechnical and geological sciences.
